Your Involvement

Perceptions is always looking for volunteers to help us be successful.

E-mail us and let us know your special skills.

Join a committee to assist in special events such as Gay Pride, a speakers bureau, assisting local shelter organizations, and building coalitions within the community. Contact the volunteer coordinator for more information.

Social Activism:

Our community makes progress every time someone comes out of the closet, reports a hate crime to police, joins a GLBT advocacy group, telephones a member of Congress to ask their support on legislation, or writes a letter to the editor.

Perceptions'
10-county service area is represented by four Members of the U.S. House of Representatives and two U.S. Senators in Washington, DC; plus eight Michigan House Members and five State Senators in Lansing. Know who your elected officials are and contact them about matters of importance to you and the GLBT community.

Media coverage is one of the best ways to gain the attention of decision-makers, educate the public and overcome stereotypes. It is also a vital way of countering the vast resources that are poured into influencing the public by ultra-conservative organizations that thrive on denigrating the GLBT community. If you like to write, are pretty good at it and have something compelling to say, you’re ready to write your own letter to the editor. This section of your local newspaper offers an ideal method of getting your message across to a wide variety of readers. More people read the letters to the editor section than almost any other part of the paper. If you find you have a flair for letters to the editor, then you might consider drafting an Opinion Editorial. Op-eds enable you to have your say in a format that allows more detail than a letter to the editor. Also, if your paper editorializes on a subject and you disagree with that opinion, you can ask for space to publish an alternative view. Perceptions is building a list of the newspapers that service our 10-county service area.

See the Non-Partisan Social Activism category of the Online Forum for additional information about current issues that may be of interest. In some cases you will find a link in the posting to directly "Take Action" by contacting your elected representatives.
